There is a lot of difference in the games children played back in those earlier years and now.
Those day's there was no TV 's or computers to keep children in the house. That is not to say
that there is anything wrong with that, but for us when, if you stayed in the house, mama found
something for you to do..(like work) sooo out the door we would go when we got the chance.
Kids made up games to play..when Leland was about 7 years old he was living in Whitesboro
and at one time lived on Halleluiah street, named because of the number ot children. One of the
games he remembers they played was 'truth or consequences'..guess you all know how that game goes. Someone ask you a question and if you couldn't answer it then you pay the consequences. He
was ask a question that he couldn't answer and his consequence was to run around this house on
the block that was narrorw and rather long. Needless to say he was one scared 7 year old but
did start running and when he had gotten about half way around the back of the house, and it was pitch black, some of the bigger boys had slipped around there and grabbed him by the leg as he flew by. He still remembers that as one of his scarest moments!
Another thing is he had this special friend, Kenneth Hawkins. He and Kenneth and some other boys
and girls(??) would ride their bicycles north of town and stay away all day playing. There was a
creek there and they would swing from the trees and fall in the creek. The Lord was watching over a bunch of kids because no one drowned.
I remember Charles and I would play with little cars. I do not remember if we really did have little
cars or if we just used little blocks of wood and pretend they were cars and trucks. We didn't have
grass in the yard and mother would actually sweep the yard at times..don't ask me why..anyway,
we could make little roads and hills in the black dirt and play for hours. Jump rope was a real
favorite too. I remember that two people would throw the rope and one person jump it and then
they would see how fast they could throw it and see how long you could keep jumping without
tripping. We also had just a rope that we jumped by ourselves. I am sure kiddos still do that some.
Marbles was another game that was real popular..kids would carry their marbles to school and
play at recess.Of course, Cowboy and Indians was a favorite of all boys and I remember many
of the guns were handmade carved out of wood. In the game of pretend they were as deadly as
any gun on the market.
I know there were a lot of other games but these come to mind.
Until next time remember:
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, Oh Lord,
my strength, my redeemer. Psa.19:14

JoAnn's little tin cup
All of us know and love JoAnn, but how many of you know she once stood on the street with a little tin cup and got change from strangers?
I really think I should explain this...
We had moved from Dallas to Sherman. Housing was almost impossible to find, but our parents did find a place on Elm St. On one side the street there had at some point been businesses along that one half block. Most of them were gone except for a barber shop and small cafe..the rest were rented to people looking for a temporary place to live. It was less than an ideal place to live, but sometime you have no choice. It was a rather busy street because of the barber shop and cafe plus there was a grocery store across the street along with a used car lot and service station on the corner.
Daddy and mother both worked and I was in school. JoAnn was 5 years old. Daddy's s-mother lived with us and watched JoAnn. Children do get out of your site at times and this happened, she got her little cup and preceded to stand out there on the sidewalk just out our front door. At some point grandma missed her and discovered what she was doing and promply got her in. Daddy and mother got the news when they got home and to say they were horrified is putting a gentle touch on it.
Needless to say, her career ended with a screeching halt!!!.I have no idea how many day's she got by with this before being caught or how much money she brought in. One thing you can say about this 5 year old kid..she knew early on that money was a good thing to have.
By the way, sissy what did you spend that money on????

Esther Got Mad at me.
For one thing Esther didn't like me hanging
around when Leland came to see her. I wanted to hang out with them. They
always left on a date soon after he got there so I don't know what the problem was.
One night when he came over to pick her up they were in the living room and I was behind
the couch. I saw him kiss her and then she saw me that wasn't a happy ending.
She probably didn't tell on
me because then she would had to tell that she was kissing Leland and she
probably didn't want mother and daddy to know that.

God Killed a Snake
Submitted by Sharon Pedigo
Truth is we all need a Savior. According to the Bible all have sinned and
fall short of the glory of God. That
just means He is Holy and our sin separates us from Him. God does not just overlook sin anymore than
Wayne could have just ignored that snake.
Sin ultimately brings death, eternal death, eternal separation from God.
We cannot save ourselves. God made a way for us to be saved and have eternal
life with Him. Quote John 3:16. Not long before the day that God killed that
snake in the gully, I trusted in Jesus Christ to be my Savior. I knew I needed forgiveness and I wanted to
belong to Him. He forgave my sin and I surrendered my life to Him. I have
eternal life through Jesus Christ. He
has never left me.
When I was a young girl, my
parents bought a farm south of here. I
was in 4th grade, my brother Wayne
was in 5th. In Nov the pecans
were ready to be picked up, but there were too many dead limbs under the big
pecan tree. One day Mother put Wayne and
me to work clearing out those limbs. Now it was hard work, but mainly I didn’t
like doing it because it was just so boring, picking up the dead branches and
going back and forth between the tree and the gully dragging and carrying the
limbs. Little did I know that job was going to be anything, but boring. Wayne had drug a big limb
into the gully and I was a few steps behind when he stopped dead still and yelled
get the gun! At our house that was short
for there’s a snake. I shot off to the house yelling for mother to
get the gun. Daddy was at work. She quickly loaded the 22 with 2 bullets and
we were back at the gully in a flash. Wayne was still frozen
and had not moved a muscle. She took one
shot at the coiled up rattler and missed. She aimed again with her only bullet
left, and hit it just below the head. It rattled as it spun up in the air a bit
and fell dead. Turned out it was a 4ft velvet tailed rattler, very rare around
here and the only one we ever saw. Daddy
was so proud of Mother he took that snake the next day out to the drilling rig
where he worked to show all the men he worked with. She had never even shot a
gun before we moved there 3 months earlier.
Now I’ve thought about that
day a lot of times through the years.
That snake, because of his nature was coiled and ready to strike. He was not a friend. Wayne, probably with everything in him wanted
to turn and run, but we had both been drilled over and over if we ever came
upon a snake that was ready to strike do not move, stay absolutely still. Wayne
was helpless in that moment. He could
not do anything to save himself. I could
not save him. I could only get Mother,
but even she had no power to actually stop that snake from striking Wayne . She said it was God that killed that
snake.

fall short of the glory of God. That

Send in some of your old remedies
VICKS VapoRub - INTERESTING
During a lecture on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20 Minutes you can 'taste' it. Some of us have used Vicks VapoRub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore toes and many body parts in between. But I've never heard of this. And don't laugh, it works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren't sure why. To stop night time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out personally), put Vicks VapoRub generously on the soles of your feet, cover with socks, and the heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time and is more effective in children than even very strong prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely Soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly. Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more harm than good, due to the chemicals in them This method of using Vicks VapoRub on the soles of the feet was found to be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bed time. In addition it seems to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly. My wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing stopped in a few minutes. So she went from; every few seconds uncontrollable coughing, she slept cough-free for hours every night she used it. If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If you end up sick, try it yourself and you will be amazed at how it works. DON'T SHUN THIS ONE.. TRY IT THE NEXT TIME YOU GET A BAD COLD. THE ONLY THING YOU CAN LOSE IS YOUR COUGH... |
Barbara Kirbie sent this to me, I thought I would pass it along.

Is this happening in America?
These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:
1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.
This was taken in part from the email going around titled "67 years."
Doesn't matter if you are Democrat, Republican, Independent or you are neither of these, the facts are facts.

problem.
4. The tomb will still be empty.
5. Jesus will still be the only way to heaven.
6. Prayer will still work - it will still make a difference
and God will still answer prayer.
7. The cross, not the government, will still be our
salvation.
8. There will still be room at the cross.
9. Jesus will still save anyone who places faith and trust

We started out with a newsletter
Submitted by Terri: The first original family newsletter was started around 1988 when mom (Jo Ann) got her first computer in 1988. She also had a dot matrix printer. Remember those? The ones you threaded the paper through the tracks on the side of the printer. She, Esther and Ione would take turns doing the editorial and mailing out the newsletter; which was sent to all family members each month by mail. (Stamps were .25 cents each.)
Each month the family members would contribute news and send in money or pay for their own stamps to get the next letter. Fast forward 23 years, she, along with her loving sisters and niece Anne have spent hours of time puttng this site together so that our families can stay connected.

Vicky
Many of you know Vicky was in nursing but how far she took her career is what many people do not know. After getting her RN license she worked at the HCA hospital in the emergency room in Plano. Later she worked in ICU for heart patients, on a pediatric floor in Corpus Christi. When she moved back to San Antonio she worked at Methodist Hospital as nurse manager in the emergency room, manager to about 70 nurses. During her career she taught nursing students and flying around the country meeting with other qualified nurses to make up test questions for the state's exam for licensing nurses.
She now owns her own business "Timeless Renovations" in San Antonio. She is a successful contractor that remodels homes.
She has a crew of 3 full time men, all brothers.
Diana works with her in day to day operations and I do the bookkeeping. See her website at www.timelessrenovationssa.com

Many of you know Amanda, Vicky's daughter is a pharmacist. Do you know she works at a small hometown pharmacy in Austin. It still has the soda fountain, ice cream and sandwiches. Amanda is also a part time model.
Leland & Esther trailer house

Did you know?
That in 1951 Leland and Esther moved into an eighteen foot trailor house, as they were called in those days's instead of mobile homes. Leland had gone to work for Humble oil that is now Exxon. Humble had camps for employee's and they were really nice places to live. This one was at Kelsey Bass and it was 50 miles from Rio Grande City and 50 miles from Falfurris.
It was a very pretty camp with St. Augustine grass, Palm trees and we even had a swimming pool.
This small trailer was all that was available for us and we took it. Now I want to clear up something real quick, we did have a bathroom. It was outside the house in a neat building that had a cement floor, commode, shower and closet. Later we bought a washing machine that fit there real well. Living in that small place with two children was an experience! Sharon was nine months old and Wayne was 19 months older. The couch made into a bed that we let down each night and the kitchen table was a booth that we raised and lowered the table for a bed. It had cushions that we placed out that made a nice mattress for Wayne and Sharon. This table was attached to the wall on one side and held up on the other end by a leg. Sharon sat in her high chair at the end of the table and seemed to think it was funny to kick the leg out from under the table when we were eating. I guess she enjoyed the excitement it caused. It didn't take long for us to learn to eat holding our knees up against the table to keep it from falling.
Aren't children precious to leave us all these memories?? That is just one memory, there are dozens. Actually, we do have fond memories of there, it was o.k.. One thing it really did was to make everywhere else we lived look real big

Wayne with the ducks
The move with the ducks
Recently Beth (Wayne's sister) and I had dinner in Salado,Tx
with Merle and Karen Stalcup. Merle is Wayne's nephew and the mayor of Salado. I mentoned something about a monkey we had once and Merle said he didn't know we had a monkey. Oh yes,
he was a mischievious little outfit and didn't waste any time making himself at home. His bathroom habits wasn't a problem, the girls took him out on a leash, but he would get loose and go up a tree in a neighbor's yard. Screaming and carrying on. He rode in our car with his hands holding on to the dashboard. He wore clothes my mother made him. This is not a picture of Coca but it looks like him. We later traded him at a pet store for a nice quiet aquarium. I think even the girls were glad to trade. --> -->
Beth remembered another story about 3 ducks our girls had once. The were Easter ducks and they grew big. Wayne was with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission stationed in Beaumont. He didn't like that work and decided he wanted to go back into "real" police work so we moved to North Texas. The girls said we had to take the ducks, we couldn't leave them behind. So we got a chicken coop. The plan was two girls would ride with me and also the chicken coop carrying the ducks. One girl would ride with Wayne in the U Haul truck. They would take turns riding with him in the truck. We hadn't went very far when none of the girls wanted to ride with the stinky ducks. Once I found myself riding by myself with the stinky ducks. Something wasn't right about the plans. Wayne told me while I was standing by the car all hot & sweaty and smelling like ducks, he had to drive the truck and the coop wouldn't sit in the front seat. I thought "how convenient for him." We stopped in East Texas to spend the night with Beth and then the ducks got loose and ran off. I thought "Hallelujah!!" But two ducks got caught and one was still loose. Beth said she and her dad, who was visiting her said if they could find it they would keep it for us or bring it to us. Sure enough, they found it. It joined the others a little later but the next morning we left to drive the rest of the way to our new home. With 2 of the 3 ducks.
